The primary mission of the Department of Microbiology and
Immunology is to promote excellence in basic research and
teaching of medical students, graduate students and postdoctoral
fellows in the areas of Immunology, Infectious Disease, Hematopoiesis
and Genetics. The Department also serves as one of the main
basic science arms of the Kimmel
Cancer Center (KCC)
that houses a variety of central facilities available to
Department laboratories. The Department currently consists
of 17 Faculty Members whose
research efforts are supported by robust funding from the
National Institutes of Health and other extramural funding
agencies.
The Department together with the Department of Biochemistry
and Molecular Biology and the KCC offers graduate
programs in Genetics, Immunology and Microbial
Pathogenesis, and Molecular Pharmacology and Structural Biology.
These programs of study are designed to provide graduating
students with outstanding training and research experience
that will allow them to pursue future careers as scientific
investigators in academic, biotechnology, government or industrial
settings. Students in each program take core courses in microbiology,
immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology
and complete three laboratory research rotations by the end
of their first year of study. They then elect a specific
program and mentor in whose laboratory they will complete
their studies.
The Department hosts a vigorous post-doctoral fellow program
with over 45 Ph.D., M.D. and M.D., Ph.D. level researchers
from the USA and abroad participating. Development of the
careers of Post-doctoral Fellows in the Department is facilitated
by the Office for Postdoctoral Affairs, College
of Graduate Studies.
In collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology and the KCC, the Department has been highly
successful in obtaining extramural funding for our Training
programs. We currently have four NIH-funded training grants
that provide stipend and research expense support for both
pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows. These include training
in Molecular
Genetics of Cancer, Cancer Immunology, Developmental Immunology,
and Cancer Pharmacology.
