The Visiting Fellowship Programs

Program Description

The Visiting Fellowship programs managed through the department of radiology are designed to provide a flexible and individualized learning experience. Enrollment in the Visiting Fellowship program is limited and application in advance of the desired fellowship period is required. See individual program descriptions for tuition specific to that Fellowship.  CME credit is available for Visiting Fellowships.  Jefferson Medical College designates this activity for up to 150 hours in Category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award.

Visiting fellows will participate in a comprehensive overview of clinical echocardiography as experienced during a typical day in our laboratory. Routine Echo/Doppler, stress echo (exercise and pharmacologic), contrast echo, transesophageal and intraoperative studies are performed daily and will permit a program tailored to an individual’s needs. Fellows will observe studies being performed. Daily interpretative reading sessions allow the fellow one on one interaction with our staff echocardiographers. An extensive audio visual file, include taped didactic lectures on every facet of echocardiography are available, Cardiac anatomic imaging, noninvasive hemodynamics and left ventricular function quantitation will be emphasized for beginners, with instruction in tissue Doppler, PISA and other quantitative measures for more advanced fellows . Additional exposure to 3D echo and other advanced analysis techniques can be arranged for advanced fellows

Ultrasound-guided Thyroid Biopsy

Sharon Segal, DO

Director: Sharon Segal, DO
Tuition:  $1,000 for 1 day, $500 for second and third day.

The Thyroid Biopsy tutorial is currently offered only on Wednesday each week.  This visiting fellowship provides observation of ultrasound scanning and ultrasound-guided biopsy in 6-10 cases per day.  The visiting fellow has extensive one-to-one interaction with Dr. Segal throughout the day.  Tuition includes a biopsy phantom for the visiting fellow to use for supervised practice during the day and to take home for further practice.  The fellowship also includes a one-to-one didactic session (lecture) covering thyroid disease and the role of ultrasound imaging and biopsy in diagnosis and treatment. The visiting fellowship may be extended to a second or third day focusing on techniques of ultrasound-guided procedures and set-up of a dedicated ultrasound interventional procedure area. Learning goals for this highly specialized visiting fellowship are:

  • Develop an understanding of the role of ultrasound imaging in thyroid disease
  • Develop an algorithm for recommending thyroid/neck FNA based on imaging results
  • Learn the technique of ultrasound-guided FNA of thyroid/neck masses

Learning goals for the interventional procedures extended second and third days:

  • Develop an understanding of the role of ultrasound-guided interventional procedures
  • Describe the process of setting up a new dedicated interventional service

Ultrasound Academic Visiting Fellowship

Barry B. Goldberg, MD

Director: Barry B. Goldberg, MD
Tuition: $600 for the first week and $500 for each additional week.

For the individual primarily interested in intensive academic study of ultrasound, the academic fellowship provides access to our teaching materials including the video tapes of all our courses and our textbook library. During the academic visiting fellowship, the fellow may attend all regularly scheduled JUREI ultrasound courses at no additional cost. Course hands-on sessions are not included.  Hands-on may be taken, but it is a separate registration with no discount. Most of our Academic Fellows plan their visit to incorporate one or more live courses and supplement this by viewing recorded courses in other areas of ultrasound.  The Academic Visiting Fellowship does not include access to the clinical facilities and is available only for ultrasound.

A reduced tuition of $500 for the first week and $300 for each additional week is available to individuals practicing in a country that appears on the World Health Organization List of Least Developed Countries at URL  http://www.un.org/special-rep/ohrlls/ldc/list.htm

The computed body tomography visiting fellowship offers close contact with dedicated CT radiologists. The majority of this fellowship consists of participation in the reading of body CT images. Fellows may work with technologists on workstations and multi slice scanners (with prior arrangement) and also participate in weekly conferences/lectures.

The objective of this program is to support development of an understanding of the computed tomographic sectional diagnosis of the mediastinum, chest, abdominal organs, retroperitoneum and pelvic structures. The visiting fellow will also have the opportunity to develop confidence in the selection of appropriate computed tomographic protocols for specific clinical problems. This fellowship is offered in one-week blocks. Subspecialty concentrations available include chest, abdominal and vascular. The visiting fellowship experience can be tailored to individual needs. Equipment: Multidetector CTs from several manufacturers with 256, 64 and 16 detectors are used daily in the division. CT fluoroscopy is also used for interventions. Workstations from multiple manufacturers as well as standalone workstations are available for review.

This fellowship emphasizes routine and advanced clinical applications of Body MRI, including dynamic multiphasic gadolinium enhancement in all body parts, gynecologic MRI, total body MRA, MRCP, cardiac, etc. This busy teleradiology-based service reads body cases from a total of nine 1.5 Tesla units (seven with advanced echo planar capabilities), two 3.0 Tesla units with advanced features, two 1.0 Tesla units and three open MRI systems (1.5T, 0.7T and 0.3T), providing a unique opportunity to learn protocol optimization for systems with varied capabilities. All case interpretation and teaching is by five body MRI specialists who emphasize practical application of MRI physics and techniques. Depending on interest, a combined body/ musculoskeletal fellowship can be arranged.
