Services of the Office of Student Affairs and Career Counseling

The mission of the Office of Student Affairs and Career Counseling (OSACC) is to provide quality student services based upon:

  • Partnerships between students, faculty, and students;
  • Advocacy for student rights and responsibilities

An Overview of Services

  • Coordinated Advising Program
    • Faculty Advisor Assignments (organization and coordination)
    • Resource for academic counseling and advising
    • Academic resource referrals
    • Personal guidance (counseling, financial, deaths, malpractice, withdrawals/leaves of absence, grievances, JEFS Program, etc.)
    • Student life issues (housing, insurance, etc.)
    • Progress monitoring and remediation

  • Policies and Procedures
    • Clarification/interpretation/communication of Jefferson Medical College policies and procedures through class orientations, student leaders, individual counseling
    • Representation for student organizations and class leadership with the Dean's Office
    • Communication/coordination with Academic Affairs and the Committee on Student Promotions (COSP)

  • Student Opportunities, Awards, and Recognition
    • Letters of recommendation for scholarships, research grants
    • Counseling regarding Research and Clinical Opportunities

  • Career, Professional, and Personal Development
    • Advice regarding Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS)
    • Coordination of Dean's Letters
    • Coordination of Match Day/Scramble
    • Develop Communication with Jefferson Medical College alumni
    • M1 Career PREP Self-assessment Workshop
    • M2 Career PREP Surveying Alternatives Workshop
    • M3 Career PREP Specially Selection Workshop (GlaxoWellcome Specially Profiles)
    • Collaboration with student organizations regarding Residency Interview Workshop and Match Strategy Workshop

  • Front Desk Services
    • Reception of students, faculty staff, guests
    • Responding to student requests and inquiries
    • Directing students to appropriate resources
    • Problem solving and student advocacy
    • Liaison for various campus offices
    • Collecting and forwarding forms
    • Scheduling appointments with staff advisors
    • Processing student forms for:
      • Letters of good academic standing, exemption from jury duty insurance coverage, scholarships, USMLE certification, completion of externship application
      • Health insurance applications and changes
      • Faculty advisor assignment or reassignment

    • Events Planning and Management
      • Class Orientation Program
      • The Mentoring Program
      • The Preclinical Advising Program
