Contact Procedures in the Event of an Emergency

When emergency care is needed, especially in potentially life-threatening circumstances, including suicidal thoughts or exhibiting other signs of serious depression, faculty and students are urged to immediately go directly to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Emergency Room:

  • The Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Emergency Room is located in the Main Hospital building at 10th and Sansom Streets. The telephone number for the Emergency Room is 215-955-6840.
  • In order to receive further guidance and support, please notify the Office for Student Affairs and Career Counseling. The number for the Office for Student Affairs and Career Counseling is 215-503-6988 during business hours (please identify the emergency nature of your call). After business hours, please page the On-Call Dean for Student Affairs at 215-312-2197.
    Other campus resources:
  • James Youakim, M.D., Director of The Student Personal Counseling Center can be reached at 215-503-2824 during business hours (please identify the emergency nature of your call on the confidential answering machine).
  • Dr. Ellen O'Connor, Medical Director of University Health Services, can be reached at 215-955-6835. University Health Services is located at 6230 Gibbon Building (111 South 11th Street). Currently, the office hours are 8 AM to 4 PM on Monday through Friday.
  • After hours emergency service for students with medical and psychiatric problems is available at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Emergency Room at 215-955-6840. The Emergency Room is located in the Main Building at 10th and Sansom Streets.
  • The Special Counselor in Residence, Father Edward Bradley, SJ, MD, is available for personal counseling and spiritual advice. He can be reached at 215-928-1614 (or by Pager 215-955-6060, #2658 in emergencies).

  • Please contact the Office for Student Affairs and Career Counseling at 215-503-6988 during business hours (please identify the nature of your call). If the staff is helping other students and cannot answer the phone, please leave a message on the message machine and someone will return your call within 24 hours.
