Jefferson General Surgeons have achieved excellence in many surgical fields and have expanded the boundaries of surgery in a number of organ systems, especially with regards to the digestive tract. They have had important success in radical liver resections for otherwise untreatable liver cancers and in open surgical placement of radioactive seeds for pancreatic cancers, and most recently have added cryoablation (tumor freezing) to their array of available options.

The department's plastic surgeons and breast surgeons are broadly accomplished in cosmetic techniques and major breast reconstruction. Plastic surgeons and surgeons from other disciplines at Jefferson provide a variety of reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.

For breast cancer, Jefferson is one of the few medical centers offering radioactive-seed implants. Its breast surgeons have made important contributions to the lumpectomy procedure and to overall guidelines for surgical care of breast cancer.
