Research and Clinical Interests

Dr. Werner-Wasik is a board certified radiation oncologist, specializing in thoracic and central nervous system malignancies. She is particularly interested in the delicate balance between therapeutic intensification and toxicity management, as well as in PET-based response to radiation therapy in lung cancer. She serves as a Co-Director of the Brain Tumor Center and the Director of the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Program at the Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience and the Residency Program Director in the Department of Radiation Oncology.

In 2009 Maria was appointed the Institutional Principal Investigator for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) at Thomas Jefferson University & Hospitals and in 2011, the Vice Chair of the RTOG Publications Committee. SheI has been the principal investigator of several clinical trials which help define the standard of care for lung cancer.

Dr. Werner-Wask frequently lectures on lung cancer or brain tumors at national and international conferences such as the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) World Conference.

She also serves as an Oral Examiner during the Radiation Oncology Specialty Board annual examination in Louisville, KY.

In the Radiation Oncology Department, Maria leads the program of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for early stage lung cancer and lung metastases. This is an extension of our Department’s long term experience in brain stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy for both benign and malignant brain tumors, as well as tumors metastatic to the spine.

Between 2009 and 2011, She was fortunate to have been awarded several "Best Doctor" titles (Philadelphia Top Doctor; America's Top Doctors for Cancer; America's Top Doctors).
