The Department of Radiation Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University offers a wide variety of options for the treatment of lung cancer. Our unique resources include a GE LightSpeed-16 CT simulator with 4D capabilities along with an Advantage Workstation and Varian RPM for tumor motion assessment. Utilizing the 4D CT allows for better knowledge of tumor motion and control. There are a number of ways to control tumor motion during the deliver of radiation. The active breathing coordinator may be used to coach patients to hold their breath during "beam-on" time. Various compression devices may also be employed to decrease motion while breathing. The department offers a variety of devices to best suit each patient with a comfortable and most effective treatment option. Jefferson physicians have pioneered the development of gating breathing controlled radiation therapy.
Treatment abilities include accredited density corrections for treatment in the lung region, 3D planning, and IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy). Additionally, hypofractionated SRT (stereotactic radiotherapy) is available for patients with early stage lung cancer who are medically inoperable.
