Simon Kramer, MD, died June 17, 2002, in Providence, R.I at the age of 83. He was the founding chairman of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the first leader of the Patterns of Care Study. He was also a gold medalist and fellow of the American College of Radiology.
At Jefferson, Dr. Kramer became the founding chairman of the Department of Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine. He established a residency training program for radiation oncologists, many of whom have gone on to serve as departmental chairpersons in academic institutions.
Dr. Kramer initiated the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and served as its chairman from 1971 to 1980, a period of intensive growth. During this time, RTOG established itself capable of organizing and pursuing clinical research on a national basis. Kramer also undertook the organization and launching of the Patterns of Care Study of radiation therapy. This landmark study is unique in medicine and has devised programs that have offered opportunities for improving practices on a national basis. It also provided the most significant quality assessment program in medicine.
