Software

Simple Software for Non-Expert Users

The Division of Biostatistics suggests the following as a basic setup for data entry and analysis.

Microsoft Excel: Use for simple data entry (normally, one row per subject).
SYSTAT: A comprehensive, menu-driven statistics package.

For large or complex studies, a database (e.g., Microsoft Access) may be useful for data entry and data management. Similarly, for complex analyses, other packages (e.g., SAS or Stata) may be preferable. However, those are not recommended for casual users.

Some of the data management and statistical packages may be obtained under Jefferson's site licenses. Members of the TJU community can contact the University's Customer Support Center at 503-6000.

NOTE: The Division of Biostatistics does not provide technical support for these or any other software packages.

Software Used by Division of Biostatistics Members

The Division of Biostatistics commonly uses a mix of statistical packages, depending on the nature of the project and the statistical methods that are appropriate. We regularly use SAS, S-Plus, Stata, as well as StatXact and LogXact (for small-sample analyses). For sample size and power calculations, we use nQuery and a number of non-commercial programs.
