Expertise & Research Interests
Dr. Aaron Dumont is a Board Certified neurosurgeon specialized in treating vascular disorders of the brain and spinal cord. He is currently an Associate Professor, Director of the Division of Neurovascular & Endovascular Surgery and Director of the Neurovascular/ Endovascular Fellowship Program at Jefferson Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University.
He is experienced in treating vascular disorders of the nervous system including brain aneurysms, vascular malformations, cavernomas, Moyamoya disease, extracranial and intracranial stenosis and stroke using microsurgery, minimally invasive endovascular techniques, stereotactic radiosurgery and medical management. He has a particular interest and experience in extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery for Moyamoya disease and complex aneurysms.
Dr. Dumont completed his residency in Neurosurgery at the University of Virginia as well as a fellowship in cerebrovascular/ endovascular and cranial base surgery. He was on the faculty at the University of Virginia until June, 2010 where he served as Director of the Division of Cerebrovascular & Skull Base Surgery, Neurosurgical Director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center and Associate Director of the Neurosurgery Residency Program.
Dr. Dumont's clinical and laboratory research interests focus on cerebrovascular disease and particularly on cerebral aneurysms. His clinical research focuses on subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral vasospasm and stroke. His laboratory research is concerned with the biology of cerebral aneurysms and specifically factors such as inflammation and cigarette smoke that may contribute to aneurysm formation, growth and rupture. His research is currently funded by the National Institute of Neurlogical Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His research has previously been funded by the American Heart Association, the Neurosurgery Research & Education Fund (NREF, Young Clinician-Investigator Award) and the New York Academy of Medicine (Charles Elsberg Fellowship Award).
Dr. Dumont is a member of the Editorial Board of numerous academic journals including Stroke, International Journal of Vascular Medicine, Case Reports in Medicine and The Open Neurosurgical Journal among others. He is an ad hoc reviewer for more than 25 academic journals. He is actively involved in organized neurosurgery, endovascular surgery and neurocritical care having served on various committees for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery and the Neurocritical Care Society.
