Call: PGY 2 and 3 residents take call every fourth night. PGY 1 residents take call every third night in the coronary care unit and every fourth night in the medical respiratory intensive care unit.
In the intensive care units, the resident is introduced to the knowledge and skills required for the care of the critically ill patient. In each of the first two years of training, the Internal Medicine Resident rotates in both a cardiac and medical intensive care unit. The teaching rounds in the critical care rotation are geared to the special requirements for the care of the patients in this setting. During the third year, the residents either spend time in the bone marrow transplant unit or as a unit float where they will assist the unit on call.
