In the PGY-I year, the Emergency Medicine rotation consists of a month long experience acting as a primary care-giver in the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Emergency Room. Here, the intern is supervised by Residents and Attendings who are full time staff of the Emergency Medicine Residency at Jefferson.

In the PGY-III year, the resident fills a different role in the Emergency Room. Here, the resident acts as a consultant, evaluating all patients who are proposed for admission to the medical service at Jefferson. These residents participate in the initial diagnostic and therapeutic planning for these patients, and also are asked to plan the disposition of patients to either ward or intensive care settings.
