Hepatitis C Center
It is estimated that 3.2 million Americans are infected with Hepatitis C virus, the majority infected with genotype 1. Of these, less than half are aware of their diagnosis, and fewer are treated. We are at the dawn of a new era in Hepatitis C treatment, with the first new medications in 10 years approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in the spring of 2011. With these approvals comes a significantly increased anticipated volume of patients who will seek or be recommended to undergo treatment with anti-viral medication including pegylated interferon, ribavirin, and a new protease inhibitor. While efficacy of treatment has risen, so too has the complexity of treating Hepatitis C. The Jefferson Hepatitis C Center, created in 2011 under the direction of Jonathan Fenkel, MD, aims to provide a coordinated approach to the delivery of care to patients with Hepatitis C and patients with coinfection of Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B and/or HIV.
