Rotation Descriptions
Endocrine Outpatient Clinics
The outpatient practice of endocrinology at Thomas Jefferson is one of the best in the region. Fellows have the opportunity to evaluate and manage these patients under the one-on-one supervision of experienced endocrinologists. Fellows are provided with a rich experience of all endocrine pathologies including diabetes/metabolism, thyroid, bone/calcium, pituitary-gonad-adrenal, nutrition, lipids, obesity, and weight loss.
Hospital Services
Rotations on the Endocrine and Diabetes Consulting Service provide an opportunity to develop expertise in initial consultations and the management of glucose control, diabetes-related complications of hospitalized patients, management of hyperglycemia in transplant patients, thyroidectomies, parathyroidectomies, adrenal pathology and management of pre and post pituitary pathology patients. Fellow on service also participates in nutrition support service and use of parenteral and enteral nutrition.
Elective Rotations
Fellows are given adequate time in 2nd year of their fellowship to gain exposure to endocrine related sub-specialties as electives. Available electives include Pediatric clinic, Nuclear medicine, and Reproductive/ Fertility Clinic. Other topics may be selected based upon personal interest.
Didactic Training
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are all an integral part of the Endocrinology Fellowship.
| During your training you will attend the following: | |
| Monday | Pituitary- Neuro-Endocrine Conference (once a month) |
| Tuesday | Thyroid-Parathyroid Pathology Conference (twice a month) |
| Wednesday | Clinical Research Conference (weekly) |
| Friday | Endocrine Forum Case Conference AM (weekly) Didactic Lecture PM (weekly) |
In addition, it is mandatory for fellows to attend Philadelphia Endocrine Society Lecture series: From September to May of each year as well as our yearly thyroid/parathyroid symposium and diabetes symposium.
Fellows are also given the opportunity to attend Endocrine University rotation at Mayo Clinic for a week in their 2nd year of fellowship
Conference Presentations
It is encouraged and expected that an Endocrinology fellow will be asked to present conferences on a regular basis. Each fellow is responsible for directing one or two case conferences each month.
Teaching Opportunities
Endocrinology Fellows participate in the education of internal medicine residents and visiting medical students. You also will assist in teaching endocrine physiology and pathophysiology to first and second year Thomas Jefferson Medical and Jefferson School of Pharmacy Students.
Call Frequency
Fellows call schedule is split among first and second year fellows throughout the fellowship. Thomas Jefferson University follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Because much of the training is outpatient based, as is the clinical practice of endocrinology, there are no in-hospital night calls.
Moonlighting
Moonlighting is permitted for licensed fellows provided permission from the Program Director. Moonlighting activities may be scheduled during those times when you are assigned to outpatient rotations. Moonlighting should not interfere with required learning and must not violate the ACGME's work hour rules. However, please note that fellows on non-immigrant visas (J-1, H-1B) are not allowed to moonlight.
Evaluation
to ensure that fellows receive adequate knowledge and develop technical skills during their fellowship, their performance is monitored carefully during the course of their fellowship. They are given multiple choice examinations on regular basis. In addition, they are evaluated formally by their supervising faculty member every 6-months. Fellows are encouraged to evaluate the faculty on regular basis to ensure that educational needs are being met.
