Research
The Jefferson Artificial Pancreas Center capitalizes on the strengths and resources of university-based investigators, private industry, and federal granting agencies. Because of the complexity of the work involved in achieving automated glycemic control, strong partnerships among experts from a variety of areas have been established to advance the development of an artificial endocrine pancreas for the treatment of diabetes and stress-induced hyperglycemia.
Projects undertaken include the evaluation of a wide range of glucose-sensing technologies on the benchtop, in animal and human volunteers and patients, the development of a drug delivery system for rapid insulin uptake, the investigation of novel hydrogel formulations for gastrointestinal delivery of insulin, and computer simulation of the glycemia during the perioperative period.
