Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Program
 

The Graduate Nursing Programs exemplify the tradition of excellence in nursing education, practice, and research at Thomas Jefferson University. The challenging curricula and outstanding faculty assist students to identify professional career goals and to develop strategies to meet those goals.

Most of our graduate students are working professionals with busy lifestyles and multiples roles. Therefore, part-time study is available as well as full-time study. Courses are available through traditional in-class as well as online venues.

OVERVIEW OF THE GRADUATE PROGRAM
The curriculum is predicated on the belief that professional nursing is an art and a science incorporating theory, research and clinical practice. All students enrolled in the M.S.N. program share a core curriculum. Specialty areas require 36 to 39 credits with the exception of the CRNA. Full-time students can complete the course of study in 15 months beginning with a summer semester. Part-time options, enable students to take up to five years to complete the program. Courses are available via the Internet.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Program Specialties

Nurse Practitioner (NP) and/or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)

POST MSN CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

A Post-Master's Certificate option is available in all nurse practitioner specialty areas. A minor or Post-Master's Certificate is available in Nursing Education.

POST-MASTER'S DEGREE NURSE PRACTITIONER AND NURSING INFORMATICS CERTIFICATION

A post-master's degree certification program is available for professional nurses who have earned an MSN degree and wish to continue their education and expand their practice as a nurse practitioner or nursing informatics. A total of 21 credits is required for the post-master's degree certification option for NP. The following are required for admission to the program:

  • Completion of the MSN application.
  • Transcript from previously completed MSN program.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) earned in the MSN program.
  • An essay stating professional goals.
  • Résumé/curriculum vitae.
  • A personal interview, when requested.

POST-MASTER'S DEGREE CERTIFICATION IN NURSING EDUCATION

A post-master's degree certification program is available for professional nurses who have earned an MSN degree and wish to continue their education and expand their practice as a nurse educator. A total of 12 credits is required for the post-master's degree certification in nursing education option. The following are required for admission to the program:

  • Completion of the MSN application.
  • Transcript from previously completed MSN program.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) earned in the MSN program.
  • An essay stating professional goals.
  • Résumé/curriculum vitae.
  • A personal interview, when requested.

MSN Application process
Applications to the M.S.N. Program are accepted and evaluated on an ongoing basis. Full-time students begin the program in the summer semester. Part-time students may begin in fall, spring or summer semester. Admission requirements include a baccalaureate degree, RN licensure, undergraduate courses in statistics, nursing research, and physical assessment, computer literacy, three letters of reference, a resume, and a personal statement addressing professional nursing goals.

Applicants who have earned an undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or better are not required to present GRE or MAT test results. Applicants whose undergraduate GPA is 3.1 or below must present evidence of one of the following:

  1. Competitive scores on the GRE, GRE Writing Examination, or MAT
    or
  2. A grade of B or better in two core graduate nursing courses taken at TJU as a non-degree student
