Jefferson College of Health Professions Debuts New Radiation Therapy Programs
in the Department of Radiologic Sciences
March 12, 2004 – Philadelphia, PA. Thomas Jefferson University's Jefferson College of Health Professions announces two new programs, Radiation Therapy and Medical Dosimetry, to broaden the reach of the Department of Radiologic Sciences, formerly known as Diagnostic Imaging.
“Thomas Jefferson University and the Radiologic Sciences Department at JCHP are considered leaders in the health professions,” shares Frances H. Gilman, MS, RT(R)(CT)(MR)(CV), Department Chair. “We are continuing our leadership role by offering a full plate of imaging modalities. There is a national shortage of radiation therapists and medical dosimetrists. With these new programs, JCHP completes the package by educating students in diagnosis or in treatment of disease with radiation.”
Trained professionals in Radiation Therapy and Medical Dosimetry are in high demand, but until JCHP started the programs, there were few local options for training. The Medical Dosimetry program is the only one of its kind within the metropolitan Philadelphia area. There are two Radiation Therapy programs within 100 miles of Philadelphia, but only one of them offers a baccalaureate degree, and neither of them offers students an opportunity to gain expertise in more than just radiation therapy.
In addition to these new treatment programs, JCHP continues eight diagnostic tracks resulting in a BS in Radiologic Sciences. The tracks are: Cardiac Sonography, Computed Tomography, General Sonography, Invasive Cardiovascular Technology, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Radiography, and Vascular Technology.
Another addition to the Radiologic Sciences program is a new option of study for the second year of the multicompetency curriculum. Students can now select education or health management in addition to their primary modality, offering students new opportunities when they graduate. Education graduates will be prepared to teach or research their modality, while health management graduates will be prepared for work in industry doing accounting, sales, and marketing.
