Thomas Jefferson University Etiquette Dinner
March 10 at La Buca

Over the years, Jefferson has turned out some of the best and brightest doctors, nurses and allied health professionals this city has ever seen. Although they are well equipped to handle the chemical beacon and the surgical knife, our current fast-food generation seems to be lacking in the skills that involve navigating nourishment gracefully from plate to mouth. Hence, a new tool to supplement undergraduate academic offerings, “Etiquette Dinners 101,” helping Jefferson students feel more comfortable with the mechanics and protocol of power lunches and business dinners.

This year’s event was held on March 10th at 6 p.m. at La Buca Restaurant, 711 Locust Street in Center City Philadelphia. During the two-hour session, 80 soon-to-graduate students put aside their meal-on-the-run habits and their Nikes and gather at the linen-draped tables at this classy restaurant near campus, clad in suits and cocktail dresses.

Facilitator Matthew Brink, Career Services Director at St. Joseph’s University walked the students through the mechanics of elegant dining. Sprinkled through the four-course Italian meal was some definite “Don’ts” and anecdotes of promising young candidates whose employment hopes were dashed by social blunders during mealtime interviews. When all is said and done, our students should now be able to make a smooth transition from academics to the world of work less concerned with which fork to use, concentrating on being confident about their professionals skills and career options.

Tiffany’s donated some promotional items and Maxim Healthcare Services footed some of the bill.
