Dr. Gerald E. Meyer, PharmD, MBA, FASHP,
Elected Chair of American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ House of Delegates

PHILADELPHIA – July 28, 2009 – Dr. Gerald E. Meyer, PharmD, MBA, FASHP, was recently elected Chair of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ (ASHP) House of Delegates.  Dr. Meyer is currently the director of experiential education at Jefferson School of Pharmacy (JSP), where he is responsible for the development and oversight of the introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences within the curriculum.

As Chair of the House of Delegates, Dr. Meyer will oversee the activities of ASHP’s professional policy making body and will serve on the Board of Directors of this 35,000 member professional organization.

“I look forward to contributing to the leadership as we within the profession of pharmacy work in concert with patients, legislators, physicians, nurses, other healthcare professionals and numerous stakeholders to develop high-quality, affordable healthcare delivery systems for all Americans.  I feel that pharmacists, with our extensive knowledge and ready accessibility, remain a vastly underutilized resource as healthcare providers and I want to change that,”   shares Dr. Meyer.

In his role at JSP, Dr. Meyer assures that all students complete a series of required and elective experiences in community and hospital pharmacy settings that permit students, under appropriate supervision, to apply, reinforce, and advance the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values developed through the classroom component of the pharmacy curriculum.

Dr. Meyer has continued his work with the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) in addition to his faculty position at JSP.  As director of pharmacy resident training, a position which he has held for 33 years, Dr. Meyer oversees the recruitment, training, assessment and placement of pharmacy residents and provides guidance in the development of new residency programs. Prior to joining the faculty at JSP, he also served as assistant director of the pharmacy at TJUH for more than 30 years.

Dr. Meyer has held numerous leadership positions in professional associations, including president and treasurer of both the Pennsylvania and Delaware Valley Societies of Health System Pharmacists. He has also participated in various task forces, commissions and panels within professional pharmacy associations. This extensive leadership experience has well prepared him to take on his new role as Chair of the House of Delegates of ASHP.
