Elena M. Umland, Pharm D, named Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Jefferson School of Pharmacy, Jefferson College of Health Professions, Thomas Jefferson University

Thomas Jefferson University has named Elena M. Umland, PharmD, as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Jefferson School of Pharmacy at Jefferson College of Health Professions. She is working closely with Dr. Rebecca S. Finley, founding dean of Jefferson School of Pharmacy to develop the curriculum and structure of the new school, scheduled to open in September 2008.

"Dr. Umland brings valuable clinical practice and academic experience and an innovative approach to pharmacy education” shares Dr. Finley. “Her commitment to student-centered learning and interdisciplinary education will provide an excellent foundation for the Jefferson School of Pharmacy. Dr. Umland’s leadership will be instrumental in the design and implementation of our pharmacy program as well as in the development of educational partnerships to facilitate interdisciplinary healthcare education across Thomas Jefferson University."

Dr. Umland comes to Jefferson from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), where she was a full-time faculty member in the Department of Pharmacy Practice from 1996-2007. She served as Director of the Doctor of Pharmacy Program there from 2004-2007. During her time at USP, Dr. Umland developed practice and research interests in women’s health. At that time she also developed a connection with Jefferson when she established an active practice site with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and was appointed Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine in the Jefferson Medical College.

Dr. Umland has been actively involved with the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), where she served as the Chair of the Women’s Health Practice and Research Network as well as leadership positions within the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of ACCP. She has given numerous local and national talks on women’s health issues and has numerous publications focusing on these topics as well.

She has been a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy since 1996 and has assumed active participation in this organization over the past several years, serving, most recently, on the Institutional Research Advisory Committee and chairing a sub-task force to evaluate a standardized preceptor survey.

During her tenure at USP, Dr. Umland was nominated for the Lindback Award for distinguished teaching and was awarded the Faculty Special Recognition Award in 2000. She was named the recipient of the Barbara H. Korberly endowed professorship in women’s leadership and health in 2005.

Dr. Umland earned her B.S. and PharmD degrees from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1993 and 1995, respectively. She completed a Primary Care Residency at the Veteran’s Administration Medical center in Iowa City, IA in 1996.

Jefferson’s Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree program will begin in the fall 2008 semester. Prospective students may begin applying for the program in late fall 2007. The 4-year, full-time program includes a 12-month series of advanced level rotations across a variety of practice, research and business settings.

The Jefferson School of Pharmacy is part of Jefferson College of Health Professions (JCHP), an integral part of one of the nation’s first academic health centers, Thomas Jefferson University. The University also includes Jefferson Medical College and Jefferson College of Graduate Studies. JCHP has two schools in addition to the School of Pharmacy: a School of Health Professions (consisting of Departments of Bioscience Technologies, General Studies, Couple and Family Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Radiologic Sciences), a School of Nursing.
