Educational Background/Previous Work

Dr. Weening graduated from the College of William & Mary in Virginia with the B.S. (1984), M.S. (1986), and Ph.D. (1991) degrees in Physics. The subject matter of his Ph.D. dissertation involved the physics of tokamaks and magnetic fusion plasma theory. Dr. Weening holds a B.S. (2000) degree in Diagnostic Imaging from Thomas Jefferson University, where he did clinical work in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and radiography. He also has an M.I.P.P (1996) degree from the Johns Hopkins University where he did work in Strategic Studies.

From 1986-91, Dr. Weening was a Research Assistant at William & Mary, sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. He was also a Research Assistant in the Los Alamos National Laboratory Controlled Thermonuclear Reactor Division (1988) and he was awarded an Associated Western Universities Fellowship in the Magnetic Fusion Energy Division of the General Atomics company in San Diego (1989). During 1992-93, Dr. Weening was a Research Physicist at the Center for Plasma Physics Research of the Swiss Federal Technical University and a Visiting Scientist at General Atomics. During 1995-1996, he received a John M. Olin Fellowship for Strategic Studies while at the School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC. During 2000-01, Dr. Weening was a National Research Service Award (NRSA) Research Fellow in the Department of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he did further training in MRI.

From 1984-87, Dr. Weening was a Teaching Assistant and an Instructor for various physics courses at William and Mary. In 1993-95 and 1996-97, Dr. Weening taught physics and mathematics courses at the Southside Virginia Governor's School for Global Economics and Technology and various other high schools and was also an Adjunct Professor at the Southside Virginia Community College. During 1999-2000, Dr. Weening was a Teaching Assistant for various Radiologic Sciences courses at Thomas Jefferson University. In 2001, he was an Adjunct Instructor for MRI courses at Jefferson.

Department Role/Related Activities

Since joining the Radiologic Sciences faculty at Jefferson in 2001, Dr. Weening has been teaching courses in MRI Physics, MRI Procedures, MRI Patient Care & Safety, CT Physics, various MRI & CT Review courses, and Applied Mathematics for the Radiation Therapy and Medical Dosimetry Programs. Dr. Weening is the Program Director and Clinical Coordinator for the MRI & CT Programs. In addition, Dr. Weening teaches MRI & CT Continuing Education (CE) courses for technologists at the TJU Hospital and Clinical Affiliates of the Department of Radiologic Sciences . Dr. Weening has served on numerous JCHP/JSHP committees and is currently Chair of the Committee on Educational Philosophy and Policy.

Dr. Weening is the Faculty Sponsor for Pennsylvania Gamma Chapter of the Lambda Nu National Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Honor Society.

Dr. Weening directs his research efforts towards quantitative and clinical MRI methods for neuroscience. At Jefferson, he participates in a research collaboration with Prof. Joseph Tracy, Ph.D., Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience and Brain Imaging Laboratory, where the principle interest is in human brain organization and the technique used is functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Professional Activities/Organizations

Dr. Weening belongs to the following professional Societies: American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), Section for Magnetic Resonance Technologists (SMRT), Association of Educators in Radiologic Sciences (AERS), American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), and Philadelphia Society of Radiologic Technologists (PhilaSRT).

Dr. Weening is a reviewer for the following journals: Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (MRM), Journal of Allied Health (JAH), and the American Educators in Imaging and Radiologic Sciences (AEIRS) Review. Dr. Weening also Chairs the AEIRS MRI Curriculum Committee.

Since 2002, Dr. Weening has served as Chair of the PhilaSRT Student Day & Technibowl Competition Committee. Student Day is an annual event attended by more than 500 students from radiologic sciences schools in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
