Thomas Jefferson University
Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC)
The mission of the IACUC is to assist investigators and staff of the University, helping them to plan and conduct research that uses animals in accord with the highest ethical, humane, and scientific principles and in compliance with federal laws and regulations.
The primary function of the IACUC is to ensure the humane and sensitive care and use of animals that are the subjects of the University's research programs. By law, this is accomplished by reviewing and inspecting all aspects of the University's animal care and use program, including all animal facilities and animal care records, animal use protocols, reviewing and investigating complaints about improper animal use, and making recommendations to the Institutional Officer.
This mandated review function, however, does not need to be an adversarial process, and in fact the philosophy of the TJU IACUC is that it also serves to assist investigators and staff at the University to fufill their obligations under federal law, helping them to plan and conduct animal experiements in accord with the highest scientific, humane, and ethical principles.
